IDS welcomes a wide range of visitors who would like to undertake their own research, writing, or study at IDS, or who wish to hold shorter meetings and discussions with people based at IDS. Arrangements for visitors to IDS are made under the five different headings listed below.
Visiting Fellows are typically experienced academic scholars, or those employed in business, government or NGOs, who come to IDS in order to pursue their own research in close collaboration with IDS staff. All applicants must be supported by an IDS Fellow. Students are not eligible to apply for Visiting Fellow status, but can apply to be a Study Fellow or Visiting Student.
Students who are undertaking a doctoral (research) degree are welcome to come to IDS to pursue supervised study, research and writing in relation to their thesis. Applications are also welcome from taught postgraduate students registered at other institutions to come to IDS to participate in courses from our taught postgraduate programme. All applicants must apply through the University of Sussex and must be supported by an IDS Fellow.
We also welcome applications from people who wish to spend time at IDS to undertake other types of supervised study and training outside the framework of postgraduate degree programmes.
Each year a number of researchers from our partner organisations are invited to IDS to undertake research, writing or study in connection with IDS projects that they are working on.
Other visitors are very welcome to make short visits to IDS to meet with research staff, to use the library or to enquire about postgraduate study with us. Enquiries about arranging such visits should be made directly with the relevant people.
