The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting 2018, convenes leading scientists, educators, policymakers, and journalists to discuss cutting-edge developments in science, technology, and policy.

IDS Director, Melissa Leach, will be speaking on ‘Connecting Disciplines and Engaging Societal Partners and Communities’, about the growing importance of interdisciplinary research in responding to complex global challenges – such as epidemics and climate change.

The UK alone is committing over $6bn of official development assistance to research and innovation investment. The research community needs to respond to the challenges being posed, around development goals that involve both technical and social issues. The presentation will discuss the value of emerging approaches that connect disciplines, engage societal partners and communities, and mobilise evidence for impact, with illustrations from environmental sustainability and infectious diseases.
