Growth first, equality later: Is it time to redress the balance?

  • Dates: 13 December 2011
  • Time: 17.00 to 18.30
  • Location: Committee Room 7, House of Commons

Dangerous Ideas in Development event held at the Palace of WestminsterAs the UK braces itself against the effects of the ongoing economic crisis in Europe, many developing countries continue to achieve record levels of economic growth. Yet despite this economic success in poorer countries, global levels of inequality are rising - both within countries and between countries. In response to this growing challenge, the UN Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) held a high level consultation in September to discuss how best to tackle the problem of inequality.

This meeting will provide an opportunity to share some of the conclusions from that consultation and examine in more detail the social and economic impact of increasing levels of inequality on developing countries. How can we promote more inclusive and sustainable growth and what lessons can we learn from countries such as Brazil, Malaysia, Peru and Malawi who have managed to successfully combine economic growth with reducing income inequalities.

Speakers include:

  • Pamela Nash MP (Chair)
  • Sir Richard Jolly, Research Associate, Institute of Development Studies
  • Baroness Glenys Kinnock, Opposition Spokesperson for International Development
  • Tony Baldry MP, former chair of International Development Select Committee (2001-5)
  • Alex Cobham, Chief Policy Adviser, Christian Aid
