29 April 2016 9:00–16:00

Centre for Alternative Technology,
Machynlleth,
Powys,
SY20 9AZ
UK

The world is not short of transitions in action. But policy and academic debates often come up against scepticism that such rapid change is achievable. Drawing on current and historical examples of radical change, the conference aims to provide concrete ideas about how we can accelerate transitions to the more sustainable zero carbon future demanded by December’s UN COP21 summit in Paris.

Speakers include:

  • Andrew Simms – Catalysing Change
  • Charlie Wilson – Lessons from history for technological transition
  • Geoff Hammond – Realizing transitions pathways
  • Brenda Boardman, ECI Oxford – 20% people 80% energy demand reduction
  • Howard Johns – Energy Revolution
  • Ruth Stevenson – Community Renewables
  • Christopher Blake – Renew Wales
  • Paul Allen – Zero Carbon: Making it Happen

The event is free of charge to attend. Lunch is not provided but can be bought from the CAT restaurant.

This conference is part of the Rapid Transitions event series. It is organised by the Centre for Alternative Technology and the ESRC STEPS Centre.

About the Rapid Transitions series

When in the past have societies made rapid transitions, and what were the circumstances that drove them? What can we learn from these times, positively and negatively to enable the transition we need to make today in the face of climatic upheaval and fossil fuel dependence?

The Rapid Transitions series of conferences aim to change the conversation about transition in the UK. Through informed public discussion and engagement we will gather opinions, capture outcomes and stimulate debate about how to facilitate the speed and scale of the transition.
