Institute of Development Studies
Strategy 2010-2015
Global Knowledge for Global Change
The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is a leading global charity for research, teaching and information for international development. Our core vision is a world in which poverty does not exist, social justice prevails and sustainable growth promotes human well-being. We believe that research knowledge can drive the change that must happen in order for this vision to be realised.
IDS was founded in 1966 and enjoys an international reputation based on the quality of our work and our commitment to applying academic skills to real world challenges. We think that knowledge should be generated by sound methodology, and co-constructed with other development and non development actors. Using this knowledge to engage in policy and practice processes with new and emerging actors will be most effective in generating the kind of change that matters to us. It is our purpose for research and how we work that distinguishes us.
IDS hosts a number of dynamic research teams, postgraduate courses, and a family of world class knowledge services. These three spheres are integrated in a unique combination - as a development hub, IDS is connected into, and is a convenor of, networks throughout the world.
Our key strategic aims:
- We will build new alliances
- We will co-construct knowledge
- We will engage in dynamic policy environments
- We will build our institutional capacity to be fit for purpose
Thematically our research work will reflect a concern with shifts in global power, planning for uncertainty and the politics surrounding our natural environment.
