Project funded visitors at IDS

Who are IDS Funded Visitors?

Each year a number of researchers from our partner organisations are invited to IDS to undertake research, writing or study in connection with IDS projects that they are working on.

Applications to this scheme are by invitation only.

The basic arrangements

Visits may vary in duration at the discretion of the project manager. The typical length of a visit is between one and three months.

Project Funded Visiting Fellows have formally recognised status as members of the Institute. They have full access to all IDS facilities (library, seminars, etc.) and are encouraged to take an active part in the life of the Institute. They may be asked to give an occasional seminar or to contribute to the teaching programme.

Funding

Part or full funding may be provided by the IDS project with which the Visiting Fellow is associated. Funding typically covers economy travel, health insurance and stipend. Applicants should discuss funding arrangements with the project manager.

Visas and related formalities

IDS will provide a letter of invitation and appointment to help researchers make visa arrangements. However, we are unable to provide special advice and assistance in this area. We recommend that the Visiting Fellow seeks advice from the office of the British Council in their home country.

The relevant Team Administrative Co-ordinator, with support from the Human Resources Team, will advise on work permit application procedures.

Accommodation

It is the responsibility of the relevant IDS Team Administrative Co-ordinator to help find accommodation for your stay. Typically, visitors stay on campus in IDS accommodation or in a guest house in Brighton or Lewes.

The accommodation wing at IDS has 8 single study bedrooms each with its own en-suite shower room.

Facilities

Project Funded Visitors have formally recognised status as members of the Institute. They have full access to all IDS facilities (library, seminars, etc.) and are encouraged to take an active part in the life of the Institute. They may be asked to give an occasional seminar or to contribute to the teaching programme.

Office space at IDS is very limited. Where space permits, a hot-desk system in an open-plan office is available (£55 a month). Computers are included in the cost. IDS computers are IBM compatible and include Microsoft Office and internet access. For those visitors who have personal laptops, we are happy to arrange internet access.

Secretarial assistance is not provided. All external telephone calls are to be paid for by the Sponsored Researcher and photocopying/fax credits can be purchased if required.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is essential and must cover medical expenses.

The UK Department of Health website provides guidance on eligibility for free hospital treatment under the NHS. Please refer to their website or seek advice from the IDS Visiting Fellowship Coordinator, Charlotte Huggett.

We strongly recommend that you organise this prior to your departure to the UK.
