State Capacity

IDS research on State Capacity centres on the changing role and capacity of the state in the face of globalisation, democratisation and liberalisation. IDS research includes:

  • the role of the state in mobilising tax revenues and managing budgets
  • fostering productivity and innovation in state organisations
  • creating favourable conditions for private investment
  • co-production of public services by state and non-state actors
  • maintaining policy coherence in the face of donor proliferation
Most of the research under this theme is conducted through the Development Research Centre for the Future State (CFS).
