The IDS Participation, Power and Social Change Team (PPSC) has a number of research themes.
Power and Empowerment - exploring how power can be harnessed for change, tracing and learning from the many micro level efforts, successes and failures.
How change happens - on processes of organisational and social change to support social justice.
Identities, Rights and Social Justice - explores and supports strategies for rights and inclusion that confront prejudice and discrimination.
Conflict and Violence - links between the impact of violence on people's lives and their abilities for civic engagement.
Inclusive Citizenship and Governance - the meanings of citizenship and forms of citizen engagement in different settings.
Learning for Social Change - how knowledge and learning contributes to social change is at a formative stage.
Participatory Methodologies - The PPSC Team has a long history in the use, spread and critique of participatory methodologies which have the potential to give voice and hold others accountable, as well as influence change. Our capacity development and networking activities, including workshops and exchange visits, are linked to our research and policy work.

- ALINe - There is a new and widespread commitment within the development community to invest in agriculture as a way of reducing poverty and hunger. Three quarters of the one billion people surviving on less than $1 a day live and work in rural areas, and most rely on agriculture for their food and income. Investing in agriculture is key to lifting the world's poor out of hunger and poverty. (Ongoing)
