Innovative research and knowledge partnerships exploring China’s development and its impact on a changing world
China matters for development. Its transformation into an influential global power raises new challenges for development thinking and development agencies. Its rapid growth and global influence challenges the division between developed and developing countries, or donor and recipients. It is estimated that China’s aid budget to Africa will, in a decade, surpass that of the OECD countries.
China has also succeeded in growing rapidly and reducing poverty through policy programmes which have at times challenged the orthodoxy in development practice. Its rapidly evolving relationship with developing countries as trading partner, investor and aid provider differs substantially from western donors.
The role of China cannot be ignored. Many countries, particularly in Africa, see aid, trade and investment from China as an attractive alternative and supplement to links with OECD countries. These countries also need to work effectively with China to address the pressing global problems that confront us today such as financial stability, health care and Climate Change.
IDS China Group
IDS is working with Chinese partners and has set up a cross-Institute China Group. And it is creating a unique niche where Chinese perspectives are brought into development studies – a perspective that is currently lacking.
Our Approach
Expertise – We adopt a multi-displinary approach to development research and policy in order to understand China’s role in development as well as bringing together the two fields of Development Studies and China studies.
Partnership – We work with Chinese scholars in the UK and Chinese partners in China as well as an extensive network of developing country partners in the South.
