Financial Crisis

Financial Crisis Unemployed factory workerThe debate in rich countries about the impact of the global financial crisis has largely ignored its impact on developing countries. But the instability in financial markets around the world is already spilling over to the 'real economy' in several countries. The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is undertaking several research projects to give a more detailed understanding of the impact of the crisis across the developing world in order to be able to propose appropriate responses for policymakers in both rich and poor countries.

Focus on equity and social justice key to meeting the MDGs

Without a focus on equity and social justice we will not win the race to meet the MDGs by 2015. This is what UNICEF UK Executive Director and IDS alumni, David Bull, told the audience at a recent Sussex Development Lecture.

Financial Crisis projects at IDS

  • Assessing the Tobin Tax - The current financial crisis has stirred up an old debate about whether it might make sense to impose a Tobin Tax, either on foreign exchange transactions or on all financial transactions. (2009 - 2011)
  • Crisis Watch - Crisis Watch is a global network of researchers and practitioners with a shared interest in monitoring the on-the-ground impacts of the financial crisis. (Ongoing)
  • The Impact of the Crisis on World Prices and Trade - This project used a global trade model to gauge the impact of a slowdown in economic activity in the OECD on trade performance, world prices and aggregate welfare in the rest of the world. (2008 - 2009)

  • Voices of the Vulnerable - IDS were commissioned by the UN to carry out background research to produce the UN Secretary-General's second report on the impacts of the ongoing economic crisis on vulnerable populations in developing countries. (2010 - 2010)
