Biography

Thesis title: Comparative Analysis of Informal and Community Policing Institutions in Tanzania.

Research topic: In the context of the current prevalence of a global discourse of 'community policing', I propose to investigate the factors which have affected the success of informal policing institutions in Tanzania. I hope to identify the factors which have made sungusungu, and other 'bottom-up' or 'vigilante' institutions concerned with public security, effective or ineffective at mobilising citizens for collective action and contributing to public security.

General research interests and experience: East African history and politics. I have previously carried out personal research on gay activism in Zambia. As a research assistant I have worked on projects focussing on media in Somaliland, the history of pastoralists on the Kenya-Sudan border and the impact of direct selling schemes on poverty reduction and female empowerment in South Africa.
