Xavier Cirera is a trade economist with an interest in the impact of trade reform, trade preferences and regional integration. He has extensive experience working in Southern and Eastern Africa and Brazil.

His recent research focuses on three main areas of trade and development: the impact of different regional and preferential trade agreements, such as GSP and EPAs; firm level analysis of the determinants of export diversification and the impact of trade reform and trade exposure on firm level productivity; and, the impact of emerging powers in Africa.

Other interests include the analysis of spatial price variations and the functioning of rural markets, the impact of trade on income distribution and the impact of income distribution on future food demand.

The Development Studies Learning Partnership under the BRICS Initiative in 2011, enables collaborative learning between traditional and emerging actors in development, be they academics, researchers, practitioners or policy-makers.
