Fair Trade in the Mainstream
This project brought together researchers in Latin America, Africa, North America and Europe to analyse the developments and assess the implications for fair trade organisations and producers.
In recent years fair trade products have become widely available in supermarkets, high street shops and cafes. They are increasingly sourced from large scale farms and plantations, and traded through conventional commercial channels. This project brought together researchers in Latin America, Africa, North America and Europe to analyse these developments and assess the implications for fair trade organisations and producers. The IDS research team focused on UK supermarket sales, with case studies in South African fruit and Ghanaian cocoa. Full project description (pdf 116kb
