Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Beyond
As the United Nations prepares for the September 2010 the MDG summit IDS is undertaking research work in three areas relating to Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and beyond.
1. The MDGs: What works?
There is now a vast accumulated evidence body on what works in different contexts but it is not fully collated and discussed. We will ask what policies, institutional change, resourcing works for global poverty reduction? What is the niche/comparative advantage of different actors such as bilaterals, UN agencies, governments, INGOs, private sector, etc.? What are the commonalities in MDG success stories?
2. Future-proofing the MDGs: What does the new context mean for pro-poor policies?
In a post-crisis world facing fiscal constraints, climate adaptation, demographic shifts, urbanisation, changes in global governance and technological change, what kinds of pro-poor policies support resilience and innovation in these changing circumstances? How should actors such as the UN, bilaterals, INGOs, etc respond to the changing context? Who needs to do what to support global efforts on pro-poor policy? How should the UN system be configured?
3. 2015 agendas: What should replace the MDGs?
The new context of post economic crisis, climate adaptation, etc present an opportunity to rethink progress and indicators as the Sarkozy Commission and the OECD-convened Measuring Progress Project have noted recently. Although the core concerns of the MDGs - nutrition, health, education - are likely to remain valid after 2015 in some way how best can their progress be assessed? And what's missing? What indicators and institutional architecture and UN System are fit-for-purpose looking ahead to 2015 and what kind of global processes of deliberation are needed to build political momentum for 2015?
