IDS is playing a key role in advocating for knowledge sharing on climate change issues, including within the context of Community-Based Adaptation (CBA), an innovative approach aimed at enabling communities to enhance their adaptive capacity, and empowering vulnerable communities to increase their resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Sharing and communicating knowledge on Community Based Adaptation (CBA) - from Copenhagen to Dar es Salaam

During the United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen last December, IDS challenged current UN knowledge sharing practices outlined, highlighting the urgent need to better understand how to capture and share climate change knowledge within different cultural communities and communities of practice.

As part of this ongoing engagement, Blane Harvey and Katie Harris from the Climate Change Development Group at IDS, are participating in the 4th International Conference on Community Based Adaptation (CBA) to Climate Change in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from the 21-27 February 2010.

Around 200 participants will be attending the conference which aims to identify good strategies for sharing information within and between vulnerable communities, and will promote the integration of community-based adaptation into national policies and international development programmes. For many participants, the organised field visits also provide the opportunity to discover firsthand the challenges that African communities face in confronting climate change, and the innovative ways that they are trying to adapt.

IDS will play a 'communicating knowledge' role during the conference and during the field visits, present community's voices on the ground and their experiences in climate change adaptation with representatives involved in a number of panel sessions and presentations. IDS representatives will also be involved in a number of panel sessions and presentations including 'Communicating Good CBA' and the 'Strengthening Climate Resilience programme ACCRA programme'.

In addition, the latest learning from CBA planning and practices from Africa will be captured and reported via videos, photos and blog entries from the conference through two IDS related initiatives:

  1. Community Based Adaptation Exchange (CBA-X): CBA Exchange is a shared online web space designed to bring together the CBA community. It is supported by IIED and hosted by Eldis at IDS. CBA-X facilitates the exchange of community based adaptation knowledge with a focus on cutting edge research, relevant case studies, and tools and practice.
  2. AfricaAdapt: The AfricaAdapt network is one of the sponsors of the CBA conference. The network is made up of four partners including ENDA, FARA, ICPAC and IDS. Its aim is to facilitate the flow of climate change adaptation knowledge between researchers, policy makers, civil society organisations and vulnerable communities across Africa.

More needs to be done to engage vulnerable communities, improve links between local and global and provide relevant climate adaptation knowledge that can be put into action.
