The Big Question for Development, IDS Podcast December 2009

1 December 2009

Each month we speak to two people working on development issues across the world, finding out a bit about their work and asking them 'What do you think is the big question that Development Studies needs to answer?'

This December representatives from across the world are meeting for COP15 - the UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen. Their success or failure to agree an international framework on climate emissions will determine whether we are able to prevent a future globally catastrophic temperature rise of four to six degrees centigrade. Is it possible for developing countries to continue to experience growth and development while reducing their climate emissions?

In this programme we speak to:

  • Frauke Urban, a Research Fellow in the Climate Change and Development Centre at IDS. We ask her to explain what people mean by low-carbon development and how it can be beneficial for the poor.
  • Keith Tyrell a Development Director at the Koru Foundation, which works with partners to fund and develop small-scale renewable-energy projects that tackle poverty in developing countries. We asked Keith what role energy plays in low carbon development.
