Understanding and tackling the causes of Poverty and Vulnerability
Conflict
Almost one third of the world's population lives in conflict-affected low-income countries. Yet little is known about the effects of conflict on household welfare, behaviour and poverty. The Vulnerability and Poverty Reduction team has a programme of work analysing violent conflict at the micro level.
The Households in Conflict Network (HiCN), of which IDS is a partner, brings together researchers interested in the micro-economic and econometric analysis of the relationship between violent conflict and household behaviour. An associated project: A Micro Level Analysis of Violent Conflict, or MICROCON, is a five-year, European Commission funded project, taking a micro level, multidisciplinary approach to studying the conflict cycle.
- Addressing and Mitigating Violence - This programme will generate practical policy options for states and citizens so they can better address and mitigate violence in both rural and urban settings. (Ongoing)
- Agency and Governance in Contexts of Civil Conflict - analysing how the relationship between populations living in contexts of violence and armed non-state actors controlling or contesting those areas results in forms of local governance and order, and how this affects people's livelihoods. (Ongoing)
- Changing Livelihoods in Darfur Since 2005 - Assessing current livelihood strategies and options available to vulnerable communities living in Darfur. (Ongoing)
- Households in Conflict Network - undertaking collaborative research into the causes and effects of violent conflict at the household level. (Ongoing)
- MICROCON - a five-year research programme, taking an innovative micro level, multidisciplinary approach to studying the conflict cycle. (Ongoing)
- Quantifying the Impact of Women’s Participation in Peace Building - (Ongoing)
- Tomorrow Today: Development Frontiers in an Insecure World: International Security and the Implications for Development - (Ongoing)
- Training and Mobility Network for the Economic Analysis of Conflict (TAMNEAC) - training a young generation of professionals and researchers in tackling the challenges associated with mass violent conflict in developing countries. (Ongoing)
- Women in Local Peacebuilding research - documenting the role of women in local peacebuilding, conflict prevention and post-conflict reconstruction in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sierra Leone and Liberia. (Ongoing)
