Disaster Risk Reduction through Schools
'Technical support to ActionAid on reducing vulnerability to disasters by targeting schools in seven countries'
This project, led by ActionAid, is designed to reduce people's vulnerability to natural disasters by targeting schools. With a five year plan starting in 2006, the project is set to reach over 3 million people in seven countries – Malawi, Kenya, Bangladesh, Nepal, Haiti, Ghana and India. The approach is to use schools as a focus for disaster preparedness, making them - and the communities around them – safer.
The project's overarching policy goal is to help achieve priority 3 of the Hyogo Framework for Action on education and training, by institutionalising the implementation of disaster risk reduction within national and local education systems.
IDS, a key partner in this project, is providing technical support to ActionAid in three areas:
• Reviewing the ‘participatory vulnerability assessment’ methodology used with communities, focusing on how it can more effectively feature climate change dimensions.
• Developing a tool to evaluate the risks of climate change in school infrastructure investments.
• Helping shape a corporate advocacy strategy that bridges climate change and disaster risk reduction, while drawing on experiences from this project.
