Amnesty International has adopted 'Active Participation' and 'Engaging Partners' as cross-cutting thematic foci. It is exploring exactly how these concepts are understood by different actors in Amnesty International, and what their implications are for Amnesty International's work. This literature review was carried out by IDS's Participation, Power and Social Change team (John Gaventa, Rosie McGee, Andre Ling and Maria Pantazidou) as a basis for cultivating a deeper understanding of 'participation' and its relevance for the work of Amnesty International – in researching, advocacy/campaigning and, more broadly, in the day-to-day process of working with others. It draws on experience from a range of domains including international development work, human rights work, advocacy and campaigning work, social movements and popular education amongst others.
