Latest thinking on gender and climate change research, policy and practice is set out in the new Cutting Edge Pack, published this week by BRIDGE, IDS' gender advocacy and mainstreaming knowledge service.
The new resource is launched today at a side-event at COP17 (pdf), 2011's major climate change conference taking place in Durban. The event will hear experiences of women from around the world who are dealing with climate change on a daily basis.
Aimed at those working in policy and practice, the Gender and Climate Change Cutting Edge Pack advocates for a transformative approach to gender and climate change in which:
- women and men have an equal voice in decision-making on climate change and broader governance processes; and are given equal access to the resources necessary to respond to the negative effects of climate change;
- both women's and men's needs and knowledge are taken into account and climate change policymaking institutions and processes at all levels are not biased towards men or women;
- the broad social constraints that limit women’s access to strategic and practical resources no longer exist.
The pack is produced in collaboration with policy, donor, and advocacy experts and NGOs around the globe, and includes a briefing, an overview report, and a collection of supporting resources.
BRIDGE programme manager, Dr Alyson Brody, said: 'We hope that this Cutting Edge Pack will inspire thinking and action. We have been closely collaborating with gender experts, international donors and community-based organisations to ensure the pack offers a comprehensive gendered analysis of climate change which demystifies many of the complexities in this area.'
