Last week IDS celebrated the graduation of 211 IDS Masters students and one PhD researcher.
IDS graduates joined thousands of students from across the globe graduating at a two-day Winter Graduation event held at the Brighton Centre. 2,883 students were awarded degrees, aged 21 to 78, and from more than 114 countries – a more global event than ever before. The ceremony was streamed live to friends and families across the UK and around the world.
Linda Waldman, IDS Director of Teaching and Learning, said: “It’s been a great year. We hope that our new graduates will take away the realisation that they should always be open to learning, and to sharing that learning as they go out into the workplace where we encourage them to practice some form of engaged excellence to help make our world a better place.”
Yasmine Zeid, graduated with a masters degree in Participation, Power and Social Change. She said: ‘What a Year! Studying at IDS made me see why it is the first ranking institute in development studies as it gives you a holistic approach of how humanitarian development should be to navigate the complexity of our challenging world. In IDS, I had the chance to meet dedicated and passionate people from all over the world, with them and with their commitment I know that we will contribute in making a just world for everyone.’
Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex, said: “At the University of Sussex we are proud to be known for our thoughtful and alternative approach to the world. We aim to attract students with passion, who think differently, and to develop these skills during their time here – encouraging them to dare to debate, and to affect real change in their communities.”
