IDS congratulates John Gaventa on OBE in Queen’s Birthday Honours List
Professor John Gaventa, IDS Research Fellow and Oxfam’s former chair of trustees has today been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Professor Gaventa has over 30 years experience in the international development and voluntary sectors as a respected researcher, teacher and leader.
He joined IDS in 1996 as a Research Fellow in the Participation, Power and Social Change team. He has worked extensively on areas including citizen participation and action; participatory methods of research and learning; power and empowerment; and global citizenship and social movements. Professor Gaventa is currently on a leave of absence from IDS as Director of the Coady International Institute, Nova Scotia.
Congratulating John Gaventa on his award, IDS Director Lawrence Haddad said:
‘I am delighted that John has received this award. Over the last 16 years his pioneering research at IDS has highlighted the important difference citizen participation can make to development processes and outcomes. He continues to be a source of inspiration to colleagues at IDS and the wider international development community.’
Professor Gaventa’s award is for services to Oxfam. He joined Oxfam in 2004 as a trustee and went on to become chair of Oxfam Great Britain, playing a critical role in Oxfam’s development as an international confederation.
