Joy Clancy is a Reader in Technology Transfer at the University of Twente, The Netherlands. Joy’s research has focused, for 30 years, on the socio-economic aspects of energy systems for rural development planning, with a particular interest in rural electrification, biomass fuels, small scale industries, gender, energy and poverty, sustainable livelihoods and the environment; energy sector reform; energy and urban poverty linkages.

Recently she has been working on social inclusion and exclusion in value chains and the impacts on poverty. Joy is also revisiting biofuels (the subject of her PhD some 20 years ago) and is writing a book on Biofuels and Rural Poverty.

Joy is currently a member of the Dutch Ministry for Development Cooperation’s (DGIS) knowledge panel on sustainability, climate and energy. Joy is a co-convenor of the Gender and Development Working Group of the European Association of Development and Training Institutes (EADI). Joy is currently a technical advisor on gender and energy to the World Bank AFREA Programme. Joy is a founder member of ENERGIA, the international network on gender and sustainable energy, and is currently one of their technical advisors working on a programme related to gender mainstreaming in Norad’s energy programme.
