Marcio Pessôa - PhD Student

Marcio Pessôa is a PhD student at IDS with over two decades experience working as journalist in Brazil and Germany. He has been reporting (in the media) and researching civil society in African countries and in Mozambique for nearly 15 years. In the last years he has worked as researcher and project manager for NGOs and academic institutions in Mozambique.

For his Masters' degree in Civil Society and Democratic Governance at the University of Osnabrueck (in Germany) between 2009 and 2011, Marcio started his interest for defiance in civil society researching the relationship between the State and civil society in Zimbabwe from 1980 to 2010.

From 2012 to 2018, Marcio developed his PhD study by observing the dynamics of organisations and activists in particularly relevant events in the context of governance - ones that have left their mark on the country in recent years - such as the land conflicts caused by megaprojects and the extractive industry in rural areas, and the human rights crisis, which has only deepened in the political-military conflict and still affects communities on a daily basis. Over the past five years he has closely followed the activities of civil society organisations in Mozambique.
