Rob D. van den Berg - Visiting Fellow

Rob D. van den Berg has 35 years of experience in international cooperation and specializes in evaluation. Trained as a historian, he worked at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1980 in various positions such as Executive Secretary of the Dutch National Advisory Council for Development Cooperation, Head of the Special Priority Programme on Research, and Head of Dutch development cooperation in Suriname.

From 1998-1999 he was a Senior Advisor to the European Commission on research for development. From 1999-2004 he returned to the Dutch ministry of foreign affairs as Director of the Policy and Operations Evaluation Department from 1999 to 2004. In 2004 he was appointed by the GEF Council to set up an independent evaluation function in the GEF, for which he served two terms until September 2014. He has joined IDS as a Visiting Fellow in October 2014 and supports the Centre for Development Impact (CDI).

Rob has co-edited 4 books on various aspects of development cooperation and published more than 25 articles on a wide range of subjects in international cooperation, since 1999 mainly focusing on evaluation issues. From 2002 to 2004 he was Chair of the Evaluation Network of the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD.

He has chaired several multi-donor evaluations and promoted joint work in the UN Evaluation Group as well as the Evaluation Cooperation Group of the development banks. In 2008 he was the chair of the first International Conference on Evaluating Climate Change and Development in Alexandria, Egypt. In April 2014 he was elected President of the International Development Evaluation Association.

He is currently Visiting Professor at the International Development Institute of King's College London. Since 2001 he is a faculty member of the International Program for Development Evaluation Training (IPDET) at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. Last but by no means least he is a Special Advisor on Development Cooperation for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
