Waziona Ligomeka - PhD student
Thesis title: "Analysis of tax compliance in Malawi” (preliminary)
Waziona has an in-depth knowledge of taxation, national budgeting, and trade issues in African countries having worked with the Ministry of Finance in Malawi as a Principal Economist and Special Assistant to the Secretary to the Treasury for over nine years.
While working in the Ministry of Finance, Waziona has led a number of studies on taxation such as the review of taxation of the gaming industry, Costs and benefits of tax incentives, and the evaluation of the tax refund scheme in Malawi.
He has a Masters in International Development Policy (Specializing in International Taxation) from Duke University in the USA and a Bachelors degree in Economics from the University of Malawi. He started his PhD in September 2015, and he is working on research project on the factors that influence tax compliance in developing countries with particular focus on Malawi.
