IDS response to Global Humanitarian Assistance Report 2018

19 June 2018

In response to the Development Initiatives Global Humanitarian Assistance Report 2018 showing a stagnation in humanitarian spending and a reliance on few government donors, Professor Melissa Leach, Director, Institute of Development Studies, said:

“The report shines a critical light on the scale of today’s unprecedented and interconnected global challenges, and the pressure on the funding needed to address them.

“However, effective aid and development is about more than funding alone. We must also make better use of overseas development assistance. This includes long-term investment in disaster preparedness, resilience building, strengthening health systems and governance, underpinned by greater policy coherence across donor governments.

“We also need to build international partnerships to pool local and global expertise and invest in cross-sectoral and collaborative research, to ensure policy decisions are taken on the basis of solid evidence about what works.”
