The Position of Women in Islamic Countries: Possibilities, Constraints and Strategies for Change

Published on 1 January 1992

This Report discusses the position of women in Islamic countries, the constraints they face, and their strategies for change, with a particular focus on Egypt, Bangladesh, Yemen, Mali and Sudan, highlighting the danger of giving a reductionist analysis of women and Islam. It examines the legal, political, economic and sociocultural aspects of women’s experience in Muslim societies, and gives examples illustrating the heterogeneity of women’s position and attitudes in the countries concerned.
