A policymaker’s confessions: Between knowledge based approaches and a politician’s vigour

This Sussex Development Lecture will be given by Hege Hertzberg, Director of Development Policy, Ministry of Norwegian Foreign Affairs. Hege will examine the challenges faced by policymakers in balancing a commitment to employing knowledge based approaches to developing policy with complex political realities, using the post 2015 agenda as a case in point.

About the speaker

Hege Hertzberg is the Political Director for Development in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her primary task is to lead the development of new development policies. Among other things, she was heading the work of two White Papers, “Climate, Conflict and Capital, and “Towards a Greener Development.”

Prior to taking on this post, Ms Hertzberg was Deputy Director General of the Policy Analysis Unit in the ministry. She has also previously headed the Section for International Development Policy, and has worked for many years in Norad. She has been posted to the embassies in Botswana and Zimbabwe, and has also worked in Zambia.
