Four young researchers will share their perspectives on China and the Global South, presenting research that explores economics, education, international cooperation, and environmental governance.
Speakers
- Dr. Muhammad Shahid, PhD graduate of the University of International Economics and Trade, China. Muhammad will discuss the role of the Sehat Sahulat health insurance scheme in Pakistan, as well as health insurance related to child health in South Asia from an economist’s perspective. He has worked as a Data Analyst and Consultant at WHO for nearly five years, and has conducted research and lectures at universities in Pakistan and China. Beyond his research, his academic and professional experiences will bring interesting interactions for the audience.
- Tianyin Liu, PhD researcher, Nottingham University. He will present his work-in-progress book chapter, which critically examines the global expansion of Chinese higher education. In this presentation, he will explore the intersection of education, cultural diplomacy, and economic development. Tianyin’s rich academic and professional experience in Southeast Asian countries provides him with a unique and nuanced perspective in his examination of higher education.
- Vaibhav Mishra, Senior research fellow, SOAS University of London. He will share his perspectives on China-India-Africa trilateral partnership based on his rich research and practical experience. He has over 16 years of experience across public sector, private sector and international organizations, successfully combining academic research with practical experience. He is also an IDS alumnus, and after graduating from MA Glob in 2020, he has worked at institutions including the French Development Bank, UNDESA, UNCTAD, and is now focusing research on sustainable finance at SOAS.
- Zhenchuan Hong, PhD researcher, Institute of Development Studies. His research focuses on environmental governance, assessing the impact of re-centralisation reform on local environmental governance structures, incentives, and policy implementation. In this presentation, he will discuss the challenges and experiences encountered during his fieldwork, as well as how these research findings can be integrated with the common experiences of Global South countries.
