IDS and the University of Sussex
‘What’s the difference between IDS and the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex’ is easily one of our most frequently asked questions!
IDS is an independent research institute based on the University of Sussex campus, and our course convenors and instructors are all active researchers, who bring their applied knowledge and experiences of working in the field, into the classroom, and this is reflected in our teaching.
Another key difference is that IDS entry requirements include some practical experience in development (alongside an interest in critical academic enquiry), with the level and type of experience required varying from degree to degree.
However, the University of Sussex is the awarding body for IDS degrees and IDS students are members of both IDS and the University of Sussex.
The University of Sussex has four schools which deliver international development postgraduate courses, which are the University of Sussex Business School, the School of Global Studies, the School of Media, Arts and Humanities and the Centre for International Education.
World-leaders in development studies
The QS University Rankings 2023 has ranked IDS, together with the University of Sussex, first in the world for development studies for the seventh year running. The result reflects the quality, impact and range of international development research and courses offered across the Sussex campus that includes IDS’ research and teaching programmes.
