In a rapidly changing aid environment, where development actors are being asked to achieve greater impact with diminishing resources, many NGOs and development actors are looking towards partnerships with business as a way to increase effectiveness and scale-up programming.
Partnerships with business allow NGOs to tap into new resources, networks and capabilities, with the potential to achieve greater impact than they would otherwise. However, they also present risks and challenges and are not always suited to traditional evaluation approaches.
As these kinds of bi- and multi-lateral partnerships with business become more common in the development space, we must adapt existing evaluation tools and methodologies to better measure the impact of these initiatives and robustly assess the added value of working in partnership with business.
During this seminar, Carrie Baptist will reflect on her experiences creating and implementing global M&E systems for three of Save the Children UK’s largest business partnerships: with GlaxoSmithKline, Reckitt Benckiser and Unilever. She will discuss key opportunities that business partnerships present in terms of M&E, including facilitating innovation, learning and adaptation of practice. She will also discuss key challenges for evaluators and demands which must be responded to if we are to design M&E systems which better respond to the needs of business partnerships going forward.
About the Speakers:
Carrie Baptist is a Senior Impact Advisor at Save the Children UK, with over 8 years’ experience leading and implementing evaluations and research for civil society groups, international NGOs and institutional donors. At Save the Children, she leads the design and implementation of global Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning systems for business partnerships, including with GlaxoSmithKline, Reckett Benckiser and Unilever.
Charley Clarke is a Principal Consultant with Itad. She has over 10 years’ experience in international development with a particular focus on governance, civil society and accountability, community development, economic reform, and private sector development. She has implemented, monitored and evaluated studies, programmes and projects for a range of clients including donors DfID, DFAT, AsDB, and Sida; INGOs Swisscontact and SNV; private clients in the tourism, hydropower, cement, and agribusiness sectors.
