This year at COP30, IDS is co-hosting a side event in partnership with the American Anthropological Association (AAA), Climate Alliance Austria / Climate Alliance Italy, the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and Instituto de Ecología y Antropología de Acción (INFOE).

The event titled ‘The Central Role of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Just Energy Transitions’ challenges the exclusion of front line communities in energy transition by centring Indigenous quilombola and local community leaders in Brazil whose lives and livelihoods are deeply rooted in rivers, forests, mountains, and savannahs.
While the governments and investors continue to engage people in symbolic consultation, the voices of those at the frontline of energy transition have been excluded and ignored. To move towards a truly just transition, it is important to ensure that these commitments are grounded in justice to those at the frontline.
