In this Dudley Seers Memorial Lecture, IDS Director, Lawrence Haddad, examined the persistent challenge of malnutrition in India and assessed what more can be done to effectively tackle the challenge. The lecture was chaired by Prakash Shetty, Chief Executive of Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia.
India is home to one third of the world’s child malnutrition. The country’s rate of child malnutrition is one of the highest in the world and despite high economic growth, the rate of child growth is stubbornly static. This disconnect between economic and child growth has created a space where many pet theories have been trotted out to explain this apparent enigma.
The lecture will go through these theories and see which have evidence supporting their case and which only have loving owners behind them. The lecture will separate the bad ideas from the good and suggest some areas for research and action.
