Social protection for food security

17 October 2012 17:00–18:30

Chichester Lecture Theatre, University of Sussex

Listen again to this lecture

The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) recently commissioned a review of the contribution of social protection to the realisation of the right to adequate food for all.

This lecture given by IDS Research Fellow Stephen Devereux who was the team leader on this report will explore some of the key findings which include:

  • a systems approach is needed rather than single projects or programmes;
  • the most effective approach is rights-based, in which social protection systems are underpinned by legislation;
  • and the UN’s ‘social protection floor’ should be complemented by a ‘food security floor’.

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception and all welcome.
