Sussex Development Lecture: International development – challenges and changing roles for northern and southern NGOs

3 February 2011 17:00–18:30

Chichester lecture theatre, University of Sussex

Sussex Development Lecture event, co-organised by IDS

This event has been cancelled but will hopefully be rescheduled in the near future.

Part of the event series, Sussex Development Lectures.

Brian Pratt, Executive Director and Head of Research at International NGO Training and Research Centre (INTRAC).

This event will be followed by a drinks reception.

About the lecture

This lecture will look at major global changes creating significant challenges for international NGOs, and it will ask how international NGOs might adapt to meet these challenges. Dr Pratt will propose an alternative framework for understanding civil society which could provide a new set of objectives for international NGOs who otherwise, he contends, risk finding themselves increasingly marginal to international development.

About the speaker

Brian has worked in development since 1973, initially at the University of Cambridge and in Peru on the Political Economy of Peru. Brian was also a Field Director for OXFAM in the Andean Countries (1977-82), before returning to the UK to develop OXFAM programmes and Departments of Research, Evaluation, Development Policy and Information systems (1982-90). During this period he wrote the Oxfam Field Director’s Handbook, was the founding editor of the Development in Practice journal and the Development Guidelines series of seven books.
