Published on 21 March 2018

Longstanding partner and friend of IDS, Simeen Mahmud, who was a Fellow at the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), and the founder member of the Center for Gender and Social Transformation (CGST) has sadly passed away.

Together with her husband Wahiduddin Mahmud, Simeen worked with a number of colleagues at the Institute, including on programmes such as Citizenship DRC and Pathways of Women’s Empowerment.

In a letter to colleagues at BRAC University and BIGD, IDS Director Melissa Leach and Director of Research John Gaventa said:

“Through her participation and leadership in a number of collaborative research programmes, she was a highly respected ambassador for the partnerships we hold with you. She has hosted and mentored many of us in our work in Bangladesh, and her writings and publications have influenced our partners, students and others around the world. Her wisdom, insights, and collegiality have had an impact on us all.”

“We send our heartfelt condolences to Simeen’s family and colleagues, and we join you in honouring the life and contributions of a wonderful partner, mentor, researcher, activist, friend and colleague.

A memorial service for Simeen will be held at BIGD and BRAC University on Thursday 22 March.
