Amidst current global challenges such as regressing aid flows, rising autocracies, impact of AI on climate and workforce, mass starvation and wars, three IDS alumni stress the importance of epistemic humility: knowing where one stands, whose knowledge counts, and what remains unseen.
In this episode of Between the Lines, Jigyasa Agarwal, External Affairs Officer at IDS, speaks with three IDS alumni whose career span across diplomacy, humanitarian action, policy design, and emerging sustainability sectors.
- Roy Trivedy, former UN Resident Coordinator and UK civil servant;
- Camille Accolas, ecosystem builder in biodiversity and nature technology; and
- Emre Yuksek, Senior Advisor at the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency.
Each guest traces their motivation for studying development back to moments of disruption, which include a desire to understand the roles of state, markets, and communities, an interest in sustainable business practices and recognising the need for a multidisciplinary approach to societal change.
With decades of experience between them, our panellists explore the evolution of development through to the challenges we are facing today. The discussion emphasises that navigating today’s development landscape requires more than technical solutions where success isn’t just about technical expertise, but also adaptability, empathy, and a deep understanding of global challenges.
