Embedding Public Engagement in Higher Education: Report of the Action Research Programme

Published on 1 September 2011

In July 2009 the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) launched a major action research programme to support the embedding of Public Engagement in Higher Education. Its aim was to support the transformation of the sector through a comprehensive network of learning groups and experimental action. The idea was both to generate insight into key issues and to generate action on those issues.

This report explores the tensions and dilemmas which have been raised during the research process, and identifies eight key issues which threaded through all the research groups. They range form the use of space within universities, to considerations of equity issues within departments. The conclusions and recommendations at the end of the document were either made directly by participants or have been inferred by the facilitators as having strong support across the inquiry groups.
