Doing Development with Men: Some Reflections on a Case Study from Mali

Published on 1 November 2006

My interest in the issue of power started when I was studying Marx and his analyses of class-based power relations. However, I never felt that to look at class alone was satisfactory, especially in today’s global context, where class has lost its organisational salience.

Searching for a dimension of power where I could feel more personally involved, I found myself turning to gender-based power relations. This seemed not only to be a set of relations that directly touched my own life, since as a woman I belonged in the lower power position but deeper analysis convinced me that these form the fundament of all power relations.
