Vertically integrated civil society monitoring and advocacy in the Philippines

Intensifying the anti-mining campaign

Published on 1 October 2016

Civil society monitoring and advocacy that is vertically integrated across different levels of action is one strategy for seeking government accountability. This case study summary is one of a set of seven from the Philippines. Each discusses a civil society campaign in a different sector, and draws out lessons for vertical integration. The story of the anti-mining campaign in Mindanao shows how a community-based organisation was able to scale up its local campaign first to the provincial and then the national level, building alliances to develop a people-led legal strategy and a high-profile media campaign.
