Reinvigorating Human Rights Based Approaches with Redistribution

Published on 1 January 2009

Human Rights Based Approaches bring added value to development work. However, the negative implications of increasing global inequality, sharply accentuated by crises in finance, economics, food, and climate, have required rights based NGOs to re-examine how well HRBAs are tackling inequality.

How can we maximise their potential to bring about transformative change? What hinders progress? What are the  implications for policy and practice? This briefing asks these timely questions and argues that a way forward for rights based development NGOs is to bring in a social justice perspective and to highlight redistributive policies.
