Statement on Bangladesh

Published on 25 July 2024

In the context of the recent violence in Bangladesh, in which it is reported that at least 150 people have been killed and many more injured, IDS’s Acting Director shares the following statement:

Professor Peter Taylor, Acting Director of the Institute of Development Studies, said:

“IDS has a long history of working alongside partners in Bangladesh on research for development challenges. Therefore, we are all deeply saddened to have seen the recent situation unfold, including the violence and shocking loss of life.

“The situation has been exacerbated by the internet blackouts across Bangladesh. I hope all online communications will be fully restored and remain accessible, and that all violence ceases.

“I know that the events in Bangladesh have affected many of the IDS community, and for staff and students I would like to encourage you to access the support services we have available.”
