As summer transitions into autumn in the UK, the seasonal change sees IDS bid farewell to one cohort of students who make way for the class of 2023-24.
It is an exciting time of year for everyone across the institute, as we get to celebrate success with our 2022-23 students and welcome over 200 learners from all over the world, affirming IDS as a truly global hub for development professionals.
“My first impression of IDS was of warmth,” said Idara Umana from Nigeria, who will be studying MA Globalisation, Business & Development. “Everyone is so welcoming. When we had our introductory class it struck me even more than I am in the right place at the right time. The members of this cohort have been so diversely selected that everyone brings a unique perspective to looking at issues surrounding globalisation as it pertains to development.”

“I chose to come to IDS because I knew it would be a perfect environment to learn from experts within the development field and be amongst a diverse community of like-minded individuals from around the world,” says Nancy Leggett, a UK-based student who is about to embark on the MA Poverty and Development degree. “I hope to delve deeper into interesting and important development topics, gaining knowledge of my subject, whilst making life-long friends along the way!”
Dr Linda Waldman, Director of Teaching & Learning at IDS, said: “It has been so quiet all summer and IDS comes to life when the new students arrive! Even the very bricks and mortar seem to warm up. I do envy the students who are about to embark on such exciting journeys – and my hope is that they all take IDS’ vision back out into the world with them and help change things for the better.”

We would like to wish all the very best to our new master’s students and PhD researchers. The coming months will not always be easy – but we are certain that our students will work hard and find the learning experience to be rewarding. And for those who have completed their dissertations and are looking forward to graduation, and with it the opportunity to take their careers to the next level, it is only a goodbye to campus and to assignments, but not to IDS. All our graduates become part of the network of over 4,000 IDS alumni, whose friendships and professional connections will endure for many years to come.
