Alex Cornelius

MEL Specialist

Alex is a MEL specialist with over 12 years of experience in designing, managing, and implementing large scale and complex evaluations for a variety of different donors. He also has experience in building fit for purpose monitoring systems within implementation projects. His work has typically focussed on the themes of social protection, livelihoods, nutrition security, and climate change.

He is particularly interested in evaluations that require a blend of techniques to meet multiple objectives not conducive to one particular method or approach. Over the years he has been involved in designing, managing and implementing a number of mixed method evaluations; some to demonstrate impact – ranging from Randomized Control Trials, Contribution Analysis, Most Significant Change, Process Evaluation and Normalisation theory- to more developmental approaches, using Blue Marble, Sensemaking and other qualitative and participatory tools designed to feed into rapid feedback mechanisms for course correction and participatory learning.

Prior to Joining IDS, he was an independent MEL consultant, working for a range of clients including Climate KIC, UNICEF, ACF, and BBC Media Action amongst others. He was also a Senior consultant at ITAD where he led a number of high profile evaluations including the Adaptive Social Protection in the Sahel project funded by DFID, the UNICEF Ethiopia Adolescent Nutrition WASH-Education Joint Programme Evaluation, and the evaluation of the Child Development Grants in northern Nigeria.

He is currently working on the Covid-19 Learning, Evidence and Research Programme (CLEAR), the Better Assistance in Crises (BASIC) Research Programme, and the Knowledge for Development and Diplomacy (K4D2) programme.
