Upon leaving IDS in 2002, James has worked in consulting, research and project management in areas ranging from health and education to environmental management and sustainability.

After brief stints researching for DfID, James spent two years as a project manager with the International Rescue Committee in London, then managed a national HIV prevention programme in the Gambia, West Africa. In 2005, he moved to Sao Paulo with his wife, Ana Lima (MP25), working initially in research in the Brazilian health sector, before spending four years with the NGO, CARE Brasil, responsible for project management, monitoring and evaluation. In 2011, he set up Sustainability Lab, a consulting firm that advises companies and NGOs on risk management, social investment and communication for sustainability.
