Shruti Jain

Postdoctoral Researcher

Shruti Jain is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Development Studies. She works at the intersection of development, environment, communication, and democracy. She has written in Hindi and English on popular and academic platforms about her research on displacement, resource conflicts, socio-environmental actions and movements, river rights, ecological and social justice, energy transition, and nutrition security.

Currently, she is working with ‘CLimate Adaptation and Resilience In Tropical drYlands’ (CLARITY), a consortium research project under CLARE, a UK-Canada framework research programme on Climate Adaptation and Resilience, involving Niger, Nigeria, Tanzania, and India-based transformation labs working to scale up equitable, sustainable and climate-resilient water pathways.

Before joining IDS, Shruti was affiliated with SOAS as the Charles Wallace India Trust Fellow, with the Institute of Economic Growth-FutureDAMS Consortium as a Postdoctoral Fellow, with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences as an Assistant Professor, and with Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) as an activist. She remains associated with the Economic & Political Weekly journal as editor and reviewer since 2018. Her PhD in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi is an ethnographic study of the people’s responses to hydropower projects in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand in India.
