What is the relationship of economic inequality to civic inequality? How can civic engagement challenge growing inequality in the economic sphere? While there is considerable discussion of rising inequality around the world, there is remarkably little attention paid to the interrelationships amongst forms of economic, social and political citizenship.
In this lecture, John Gaventa will reflect on the important contributions of citizen participation to development, but will argue that such participation has failed to address issues of growing economic inequality. Looking at some examples of local level action, he will argue that more transformative strategies of civic engagement are needed, which link economic and political citizenship in more deliberate and robust ways.
