Project

Roads for Water

Water is an invisible passenger travelling on and under roads. Roads also act as dikes altering run-off patterns and sometimes even re-arranging watersheds. Road programs and projects directly deal with existing land and water property and user rights: farmers gaining or losing water resources.

The UPGro Catalyst Grant ‘Optimizing Road Development for Groundwater Recharge and Retention in Ethiopia’ focusses on how road projects can unlock water access for the marginal rural population in Tigray in Oromiya. It is part of the larger initiative RoadsforWater led by MetaMeta, Mekelle University, IDS, Excellent Development, HRC Sudan, NERC and ESRC.
