IDS and the University of Sussex

IDS is an independent research institute located at the University of Sussex campus, and our course convenors and instructors are all active researchers, who bring their applied knowledge and experiences of working in the field, into the classroom, and this is reflected in our teaching.

IDS entry requirements include some practical experience in development (alongside an interest in critical academic enquiry), with the level and type of experience required varying from degree to degree.

However, the University of Sussex is the awarding body for IDS degrees and IDS students are members of both IDS and the University of Sussex.

The University of Sussex has four schools which deliver international development postgraduate courses, which are the University of Sussex Business School, the School of Global Studies, the School of Media, Arts and Humanities and the Centre for International Education.

World-leaders in development studies

The QS University Rankings 2025 has ranked IDS, together with the University of Sussex, first in the world for development studies for the ninth year running. The consistent number one ranking for Development Studies reflects the strength of the teaching and research relationship between IDS and Sussex, and with partners around the globe.

The programme for the week is as follows:

  • Monday 28 April: School of Media, Arts and Humanities – Media Practice for Development and Social Change MA
  • Tuesday 29 April: University of Sussex Business School
  • Wednesday 30 April: School of Global Studies
  • Wednesday 30 April: Career Centre Talk
